One of the objectives of the Xixuau Giant Otter Project is the long-term population monitoring. An area has been kept under continuous control since October 2000 and over the last few years a census has been taken of all the individuals belonging to the different family groups.

The most efficient system to avoid repeated counting of the same individuals is the use of a video camera to film the large cream colored throat mark, singularly characteristic to each giant otter.

Thanks to the use of a small Canon digital camera the project has so far created a catalogue of 20 individuals. The images registered will be used to recognize these individuals in the future and to control the population of the area.
